Remind students of the 
Author’s Purpose

are reading, it is easier to understand the main idea of the passage or story. Remind students of 
the common author’s purposes: to explain, to persuade, to entertain, and to teach. Then read aloud 
the instructions at the top of the page. Have students read the passage. When students have 
finished, direct them to complete the skill practice activity. Review the answers together. For the
