activities. Review the answers to the skill practice activity together, and invite volunteers to share 
their responses for the strategy practice activity.

strategy. Tell students they will 
read a student report about the moon. Say: Sometimes writers organize their writing by giving 
some facts and some opinions about a topic in each paragraph. Read the instructions at the top of 
the page aloud. Then direct students to read the passage and to complete the activities. Review the
answers together.

Tell students they will practice both the 
Cause and Effect 
and 
Fact and Opinion 
skills. Then tell 
students they will read about giraffes. Say: You will need to read carefully to find different cause-
and-effect relationships in the passage, as well as examples of facts and opinions. Sometimes it is 
helpful to begin by reading the items first. Read the second item of the skill practice activity aloud. 
Then say: As I read, I’ll pay attention to the part about giraffes eating thorny leaves. Remind 
students of the 
Visualization 
strategy. Then have students read the passage. When students have 
finished, direct them to complete the skill and strategy practice activities. Review the answers 
together.
