artery
A blood vessel that carries blood, rich in
oxygen, away from the heart to the body. The oxy-
genated hemoglobin (oxyhemoglobin) in arterial
blood makes it look bright red. See also

arthritis
Inflammation of a joint. When joints are
inflamed, they can develop stiffness, warmth,
swelling, redness, and pain. There are more than
100 types of arthritis. See also

arthritis, degenerative
A type of arthritis
caused by inflammation, breakdown, and eventual
loss of the cartilage of the joints. Degenerative
arthritis is the most common form of arthritis, usu-
ally affecting the hands, feet, spine, and large
weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees.
Also known as osteoarthritis and degenerative joint
disease.
