Glossary
Alt-A loans: Loans extended with little documentation and or verification of the borrowers’
income, employment, and other indicators of their ability to repay. Because of this poor
documentation, these loans are risky. 
balanced budget: The state of government finances when current government revenue from
taxes, fees, and other sources is just equal to current government expenditures. 
bankruptcy: When a court judges that a debtor is unable to make the payments owed to a
creditor. 
barter system: The exchange of goods or services directly for other goods or services without
using money. 
bond: A promise to repay the principal (amount borrowed) plus interest at a specified time in
the future. Organizations such as corporations and governments issue bonds as a method of
borrowing from bondholders.
