Assessment Strategies in TEYL in Lower

The paper looks into the ways in which testing and assessment are 
carried out in grades and of lower elementary schools in Serbia. It re-
searches and analyses di

erent assessment strategies as perceived in class 
and discussed with teachers and pupils in the above mentioned grades. It 
further looks into the rationale behind choosing such assessment strate-
gies and especially into their e

ects on the motivation of learners and the 
possibilities of alternative forms of assessment. 
The paper points to the language areas being most frequently as-
sessed and the ways the assessment is carried out. It discusses to what 
extent such forms of testing and assessment contribute to assessment 
goals and whether they are appropriate taking into consideration the age 
of the learners and the subject matter. Teachers` opinion about why they 
use such assessment strategies is also stated and discussed. The impact of 
such forms of testing and assessment on students, especially their moti-
vation to learning English as a foreign language at a young age is explored.
Guidelines for possible and feasible alternatives to the current assess-
ment strategies are also provided.
