American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Powell was a member of both 
the IOM Committee on Progress in Preventing Childhood Obesity and 
the Transportation Research Board/IOM Committee on Physical Activity, 
Health, Transportation, and Land Use. He received an A.B. from Harvard 
College, an M.P.H. from Harvard School of Public Health, and an M.D. 
from Northwestern University Medical School. He received postgraduate 
clinical training in internal medicine at the University of Colorado and the 
University of Utah.
