which reflects a growing understanding of the
nature and visuospatial relatedness of objects,
combined with a refined grasp and release ability.
Imitating and copying cube models
This sequence, assessed via children’s desire and
ability to copy models, combines the processes
of encoding, decoding and execution using hor-
izontal, vertical and three-dimensional alignments
(Table 6.5).
Drawing
The developmental milestones in drawing ability
can be found in Table 6.6. These are evidence
that children move through various stages – from
simply making marks on paper to the ability to copy
a diamond shape by the age of 66– 72 months. Chil-
dren gradually refine their grasp – 50% of children
by the age of 3 years and 80% by 4 years have a
good tripod grasp of a pencil.
