Key learning points

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is
a neurobiological disorder
characterized by obsessional thoughts
and compulsive behaviours leading to
functional impairment.

It is common in young people; however,
delays in diagnosis can occur.

Without treatment, OCD can become
severe and chronic; however, effective
evidence-based treatments exist:
cognitive—behavioural therapy (CBT)
with exposure and response-prevention
(ERP) alone, or in combination therapy
with selective serotonin reuptake
inhibitors (SSRIs).
