A cement factory is the scene of Fedor Gladkov’s novel
«

(1925), the first Soviet novel to place emphasis on indus-
trialisation. The plot relates to the reopening of a cement factory after
the Revolution, but the cement of the title also symbolises the adhesive
that binds members of the working class. It also depicts New Soviet
Woman in the person of Dasha. Dasha neglects her daughter, who dies
in a nursing home, while her mother devotes herself to social work and
extramarital relations.
