4–12. Importance of Command Language Programs
The successes and failures of ACOM, ASCC, DRU, and unit CLPs greatly impact unit readiness. There are many
reasons why CLPs are so important. The primary reason is that foreign language proficiency is so perishable that it
requires considerable effort and resources just to maintain existing skills. Unless a CLP regularly nourishes the skills of
a unit’s linguists, these skills quickly deteriorate and may become so badly damaged that linguists’ require retraining at
the DLIFLC.
