SUBGRADE SEPARATION AND
STABILIZATION
Introduction to the Problem
Temporary roads used for hauling and access
roads that are subject to low volumes of traffic
are often constructed without asphalt or cement
concrete surfacing. In these cases, a layer of
aggregate is placed on the prepared subgrade of
these roads to improve their load carrying
capacity. Problems are usually encountered
when the subgrade consists of soft clays, silts
and organic soils. This type of subgrade is often
unable to adequately support traffic loads and
must be improved.
