ducts or services. As Figure 14.4 shows, the three forms of operations control—prelimi-
nary, screening, and postaction—occur at different points in relation to the
transformation processes used by the organization.
Preliminary Control
Preliminary control
concentrates on the resources—financial, material, human, and
information—the organization brings in from the environment. Preliminary control
attempts to monitor the quality or quantity of these resources before they enter the orga-
nization. Firms such as PepsiCo and General Mills hire only college graduates for their
