APPROXIMATION PRINCIPLE IN TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT OF LANGUAGE 
PERFORMANCE

All time theorists and practitioners have been interested in problems of bilingualism and 
multilingualism, as well as in the interlanguage phenomenon. A foreign language acquisition is 
complicated cognitive process, because learners have language experience of the mother tongue or 
another second language, that influence successful acquiring a foreign language. For the last period in 
the local academic literature any research of interlanguage phenomena in the context of subordinate 
bilingualism/multilingualism and approximation principle have not done. So within this article the 
following problems will be discussed:
- What is the core of the interlanguage phenomenon and its peculiarities?
- How does the approximation principle work in teaching and assessment of language performance?
- In what aspects should we analyse learners’ errors or interlanguage?
