This activity looks at a type of cohesion, the
linking of ideas in a written or spoken text so
that it forms a cohesive whole without
unnecessary repetition. Cohesion can be
achieved in several different ways; this activity
looks at the linking of ideas between sentences
using words such as this, it, he and another. For
example, in line 5 of this text, They refers to
computers, a word which appeared in the
previous line.
After going through the example with students,
ask them to find the words in the text that the
linking words refer to. Students could then
check their answers in pairs.
