Teaching grammar in the english language classroom: perceptions and practices of students and teachers in the ampara district

Basic information about the surveyed students  

When  the  students  were  asked  at  what  age  they  started  learning  English,  only 

10 students stated that they have been learning English regularly from grade 3, 

while others stated that they did not have regular English classes from Grade 3. 

In  Sri  Lankan  school  system,  English  is  taught  from  grade  3  to  GCE  A/L

1

. 

Further, the majority of the students (93%) have learnt English from school and 

among  them,  60%  have  learnt  from  tuitions  too.  Only  a  minority  (10%)  has  got 

the assistance from friends and family to learn English.
