I. Structure and Pattern Practice;  

Clauses: the adjective clause and the object clause.  

Time clauses such as those introduced by when, while, before, and after are used as adverbs. 

Clauses that come after verbs like say, tell think, and remember are the objects of those verbs. 

Clauses can also be used as adjectives. Adjective clauses are introduced by relative pronouns, and 

the three most frequently used relative pronouns are who, which, and that. 

Who always refers to people. The salesman who wrote the report always sends in very accurate 

figures. 

I saw the girl who you'd told me about. 

Which always refers to things. 

He looked through all the papers which he keeps in his office.  

He's looking for a report which he received last week. 

That can refer either to things or to people. 

I saw the girl that you'd told me about. 

Some of the letters that we found were ten years old. 

When that refers to people, it is usually the object of the verb (or a preposition) in the clause. 

Note that an adjective clause follows the noun that it modifies.
