2.2 Transport trends in the ECE region
Vehicle fleet
The passenger car density varies considerably from country to country in the ECE region. The
highest concentration of vehicles is seen in small countries: Malta (566 passenger cars per
1,000 inhabitants in 2009), Iceland (644) and Luxembourg (671) top the list of ECE countries.
At the bottom of the list are Turkmenistan (18) and Tajikistan. 24 of the 52 ECE countries for
which data is available have between 400 and 600 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants.
