BUSINESS
President Calvin Coolidge (1872—1933) once said: "The business of America is business". When you visit one of the country's large cities, you can see what he meant. In the centre of the city, there are many large office buildings, banks, corporation and government agencies. Every weekday morning thousands of office workers enter these buildings and leave for their homes every evening. Many of those people seem to be travelling all the time between one building and another, or between one city and another.
The men and women who do all the office work are called white-collar workers. Secretaries and typists, computer operators, and so on, work for many different kinds of companies. There are big banks that do business all over the world and little banks that serve a small town.
Many US universities have courses in business administration. They teach middle management and top management. So they train managers for different companies.
There are two kinds of banking institutions in the United States. One is called a savings bank and the other is called a commercial bank. Savings bank serve the consumer, the commercial bank serve business. Savings bank can lend money to home buyers and home builders. Commercial banks can lend money for buying a new car or starting business.
Generally there are three kinds of businesses: single-owner operated business, partnerships and corporation. The first two are important, but in the latter many people take part. In fact, in the United States, about three-fourth of all payments (=paying or beeing paid) are made by check.
The principals of the market are: for every buyer there has to be a seller; when more people wish to buy than to sell, the price tends (==has a characterirstic or direction) to rise; when fewer people wish to buy and many wish to sell, the price tends to fall.
