THE WEST: THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS
The Rocky Mountains or the Mountain States is an area of high mountain peaks, broad desert table-lands and deep canyons. Here are many of America's national forests and parks.
Montana is a mountainous region. The state produces about three million Christmas-trees a year. Montana is part of the "Cattle Country" and has about four times as many cattle and twice as many sheep as it has people. Montana's major occupation is ranching.
Montana's leading industry: oil, copper, and sand, and gravel are among the most important products.
Idaho ranks first internationally in the production of silver, lead, zinc, copper, cobalt and other metals. The largest producer of silver in the US, Sunshine Mine, is there- It is the tenth largest producer of wheat in the nation and the leader potatoes.
The most famous of winter resorts Sun Valley, is also there. Sun Valley was the creation of Averall Harriman, who at the time was chairman of the board of directors of the Union Pacific Railroad-Wyoming is second only to Texas in wool production. The growth of agriculture, however, is limited by the state's water-supply. More important to the state than agriculture is mining. Oil and oil products constitute Wyoming's leading industry-Tourism is increasingly vital to Wyoming economy, too. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Park are prime attractions.
Utah is called the "Land of the Mormons" because occupation of the territory was begun in 1847 by the Mormons, a religious sect practising polygamy. Since 1948 significant quantities of oil, natural gas, and uranium have been found.
Salt Lake City has been the capital of Utah- Now it is a large city.
The official nickname of Utah is the "Beehive Slate." because the coat of arms of Utah depicts "a conical beehive, with a swarm of bees round it, emblematical of the industry of the people". It is also known as the "Mormon State." Colorado is part of the real "Old West", not the West of romantized wersterns. Many metals are mined in the mountains. Of these, molybdenum, which is used, in rocketry. Colorado is its chief supplier.
Food and weapons are the state's two main industries. Colorado Springs is a resort city where the world championship in figure-skating was held in 1974. Denver, the main Colorado city, sits on a mile-high plateau near the approaches to the Rocky Mountains (hence its nickname the "Mile-High City"). There are more federal government offices in Denver than in any other American city except Washington, and it is known as the "Capital of the West".
