GLOSSARY
Sufism or tasawvuf (Arabic التصوف) - is an esoteric trend in Islam, preaching asceticism and elevated spirituality, one of the main areas of classical Muslim philosophy. Sufi followers are called Sufis. According to the generally accepted point of view, the word Sufism is derived from the Arabic suf ("wool")
Stages of Sufi training - shari'a (law), tariqat (path, road), marefat, haqiqat.
Shari'a (law) - is associated with the strict observance of all religious precepts. Preliminary passing of Shari'a is a prerequisite for entering the path of spiritual perfection.
Actually Sufi training begins at the next stage - the tariqah (path, road). Passage tariqa associated with the development of a number of steps, poppies.
Makamies of the tariqa - In ethical terms, makamies of the tariqa imply a fundamental reassessment of values. They are associated with revealing one's own vices and repentance (tauba), restraint from forbidden (zuhd), the strictest prudence in distinguishing between what is allowed and what is not allowed (vara), and refusal from unspiritual attachments and desires (fakr). Murid is also learning patience (sabr), "swallowing bitterness without expressing displeasure."
The constant memory of death, the awareness of its inevitability leads the Muride to a series of rethinking. Including - to the appearance of his careful attitude to the time remaining on Earth. Thinking about death is a powerful way of dealing with unwanted habits and attachments. Al-Ghazali said: "When something in the mundane likes you and attachment is born in you - think of death."
Sheikh and Murids - Intensive intellectual work is also carried out at the tariqa stage. Sheikhs constantly offer students new topics for reflection, talking with them about the basics of learning. Murids get acquainted with a variety of literary sources, a rich parable material, educational stories, etc.
As all the steps of this stage pass through, the murid acquires an infinite desire to attain unity with the Creator and enters the state of read, defined by the Sufis as "calm in relation to predestination," ie in a state of serenity, full of calm about what is happening.
Marefat - Those who have successfully completed the makamies of the tariqa are given the opportunity to go further along the path of the marefat - a meditative comprehension of God. At this stage, there is a further ethical "polishing" of the ascetic, there is a constant improvement of his love (in various aspects), wisdom and strength. The Sufi who passed this stage really comprehends the multidimensionality of space, the "illusory" values of material being, and receives a living experience of communication with God. As an Arif (Knower), he can receive initiation into sheikhs.
