OUR PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS
Our staff is committed to providing activities that will attempt to bring a student’s knowledge, interest, and abilities into focus. We allow each student to enjoy and experience success in his or her next level of formal education. We provide an educational setting that is staffed with warm, friendly, and personally interested adults who will give the student the message that learning is exciting and important. We establish a learning environment that will allow the student to experience the maximum amount of success possible!
OUR PROGRAM
The curriculum, which has been developed for our middle school students is designed to meet and exceed the Educational Standards set by the State of California. It emphasizes hands-on, cross curriculum education. It includes a program in Reading, Language, History, Science, Mathematics, Foreign Language, Art, Physical Education, and Computer Literacy.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade at West Valley provides a passage to higher learning and social development. Students enjoy a self contained classroom for all academic subjects and transition for daily Physical Education and electives. Art, Computers, Woodworking, Musical Theatre, Lego Robotics, and Spanish are additional elective opportunities offered as part of our academic program. Additional skills such as personal growth and character education are also stressed through the academic year. Should a student exceed the grade level standard set by our staff, a separate educational plan will be implemented to meet that student’s needs. In accordance, should a student need additional assistance in meeting the standards, our team will work towards developing a plan to assist that student.
Sixth through Eighth Grade
The West Valley Middle School curriculum has been designed to meet or exceed all state educational requirements. Detailed curriculum guidelines for each grade level are available upon request in our office. Students attend each of their seven periods every day including two electives. Study Hall, Art, Computers, Musical Theatre, Lego Robotics, Yearbook, High School Prep, Woodworking, and Spanish are additional elective opportunities offered as part of our academic program. Additional skills such as personal growth and character education are also stressed throughout the academic year.
Extended Day
Our extended day program is an extension of our academic day. A structured enrichment curriculum and after school sports program add experiences and social opportunities to our students. A study hall time gives the students the opportunity to work with their extended day teachers to assist in understanding their required homework. Extended day teachers work hard to provide a bridge between our school and home. Their goal is to make learning fun!
OUR CURRICULUM
Curriculum goals for each of our grade levels can be obtained from our office. Students are expected to meet these goals through periodic assessments and evaluations. Many of our curriculum materials are State adopted or have been determined by our staff to meet the unique needs of the students at our school. Resource materials are always available for review by our parents. Our Back to School Orientation Night is scheduled in late August to introduce you to all our curriculum materials, homework guidelines, discipline policy, and to meet the educators who will assist you in shaping your student’s academic year.
Curriculum focus includes, but is not limited to the following:
Math: logic, geometry, functions, statistics and probability, algebra, and number theory.
Science: earth, life and physical sciences, theory as well as application.
Language Arts: reading, writing, listening, and speaking are emphasized.
History: ancient history, world history, and American history.
Enrichment Curriculum
-
Our Spanish program introduces students to the Spanish language and culture. Students learn to express oral and written daily expression to communicate themselves confidently. Students also become acquainted with the general geography and culture of the Spanish speaking countries.
-
Art provides opportunities for manipulating and constructing, using a variety of medias such as clay, chalk and crayons. This is incorporated throughout the entire curriculum to assist our students in developing an appreciation for the arts.
-
Physical Education focuses on team sports, sportsmanship and basic exercise skills. Students may also participate in our afterschool competitive programs that further develop their sense of sportsmanship.
-
Electives provide additional opportunities for our students to grow and advance. Electives include: Study Hall, Woodworking, High School Prep, Computers, Yearbook, Musical Theatre and Lego Robotics.
-
Guest Speakers and field trips complete our academic curriculum. Our staff takes great care in supplementing our curriculum with a variety of experiences to enhance and enrich what we already offer our students.
