Opening for an AmeriCorps VISTA
Full Time Year of Service with Stipend at a Maryland Non-Profit
The following position is a one year (July 2016-July 2017) AmeriCorps VISTA position at the Southwest Partnership in Baltimore City and sponsored by Strong City Baltimore. The Southwest Partnership (SWP), a coalition of seven neighborhood associations and six anchor institutions in Southwest Baltimore needs to build a self-sustaining, coordinated communication network in each of the seven neighborhoods in the Southwest Partnership area.
Neighborhoods in Southwest Baltimore have experienced the harmful effects of job loss and a shrinking population. Help address these challenges through improved communication and access to resources! The VISTA will help ensure that each neighborhood in the Southwest Partnership will have a self-sustaining, effective, trained, and coordinated communication network made up of 10 area residents in each neighborhood (the smallest neighborhood, Barre Circle, will have 5). The networks will also have access to a library of workforce development, housing, educational, commercial development, safety, and sanitation resources that can distributed in response to the expressed needs of community members.
The VISTA will:
1)Meet with neighborhood leaders, service providers, and partners in each neighborhood to review current communication and outreach methods
2)Recruit and train communication network volunteers
3)Develop a resource library and communication guide
4)Train network sustainers, neighborhood association representatives, and SWP staff on supporting and sustaining communication networks
The SWP was formed by its member neighborhood associations to build an awesome, healthy, architecturally beautiful, diverse, cohesive community of choice built on mutual respect and shared responsibility. To achieve this vision the neighborhood associations must be able to share information and resources will members of their communities, hear their ideas, concerns, and needs, and involve as many community members in the process of community building as possible.
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is not a job per se, but a full time national service opportunity. Benefits include: living allowance, relocation assistance, health allowance, monthly travel reimbursement, choice of an education award or cash stipend, and non-competitive eligibility for federal employment upon completion.
