SEMASIOLOGY AND WORD MEANING

DENOTATIONAL AND CONNOTATIONAL MEANING OF THE WORD
Aim: to introduce the types of meaning of words as denotative and connotative, to analyze the impact of the word choice on the meaning of the sentence, to determine the meaning of words as they are used in the text.

  1. Three students should go out of the room. The teacher writes the sentence on the blackboard “She/He walked into the room”. The teacher prepares the students to come into the room in a particular manner. The the teacher writes “She/He rushed into the room”, the second student comes in this manner. The teacher writes “She/he bounced or floated in the room dreamily”, so the last student enters. Discuss the meaning of the sentences. Ask the students to suggest some other verbs, as strutted, slithered, pranced, oozed, and marched. Discuss the connotations and how the word choice can change the meaning of the sentences.

  2. Watch the video “Connotative vs Denotative”. Make sure that the students understand the difference between denotation and connotation. Write on the blackboard:

4. The closer a word is to describing what an individual believes about him/herself, the more positive the euphemism becomes. Thus:

  • I am a brilliant conversationalist / You “talk a lot” / She “never shuts up”
