National holidays of Uzbekistan

Men’s clothing

  • The basis of national men’s suit is a chopon, the quilted robe, tied with a shawl. Traditional men’s cap is tubeteyka. Kuylak is the men’s straight cut shirt. Ishton is men’s wide trousers, narrowed at bottom. Traditional footwear is high-boots, made of thin leather. Frequently holiday outfits were tied with beautifully embellished belts: made of velvet or richly decorated with embroidery, silver pendants and buckles. Everyday shirts are tied with long sashes.

Women’s clothing

  • Traditional Uzbek women’s suit consists of plain khan-atlas tunic-dress and wide trousers. Holiday garments were made of atlas fabric and richly embroidered with golden thread. Women’s headdress consists of three elements: a cap, headscarf and turban. An indispensable part of traditional holiday garments of Uzbek women are gold and silver jewellery: earrings, bracelets, necklaces.

Official Holidays in Uzbekistan

  • Each year Uzbekistan celebrates seven public holidays: 1st of January – New Year, 8th of March – International Women’s Day, 21st of March – Navruz, 9th of May – Memorial Day, 1st of September – Independence Day, 1st of October – Teacher’s Day, 8th of December – Constitution Day. Also Uzbekistan celebrates the Day of Defenders of Motherland on January 14 and the Day of Remembrance for the victims of political repressions, observed on August 31, though these holidays are not free days. Two major Muslim holidays in Uzbekistan, Ramadan Khait and Kurban Khait, are days off and are celebrated each year according to the lunar calendar.

Ramadan Hayit (Eid-al-Fitr)

  • Ramadan Hayit is the celebration of spiritual and moral purification. It falls on the 9th month of Hijri year of the Islamic calendar. The holiday marks the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of fasting during the entire month of Ramadan.

Qurban Hayit (Eid-al-Adha)

  • Qurban Hayit is one of the main religious Muslim holidays. It is the Festival of Sacrifice. Its origin goes back to the ancient history, related with the prophet Ibrahim.
  • Qurban Hayit lasts three days. Muslims celebrate it in the circle of their family and friends. It is used to visit relatives and friends as well as sick and poor people. First day of the holiday is a day-off.
