Established in 2003 by Liana Burgess, an Italian translator and the second wife of Anthony Burgess, the Burgess Foundation is an independent charity that encourages research into the life and work of the Lancashire-born writer. The Foundation houses a library and study, boasting a vast bank of material on subjects that relate to the author, ranging from unpublished plays and film scripts to cassette tapes, letters and manuscript scores. The archive also contains family photographs and personal artefacts, including items that relate to Manchester in the pre-war period.[15,85]
The Foundation podcast series The Burgess Foundation has produced a series of podcasts covering themes and issues that arise from the author’s work, which feature the voice of the great writer himself. The first podcast in the series, which you can listen to below, explores the notions of dystopia that permeate Burgess’s work, discovers the influence of writers like George Orwell and Aldous Huxley, and asks how Burgess’s experiences in the Second World War informed his writing.
The legacy of Shakespeare looms large over any significant British writer, and Burgess was no exception. In episode two, we hear Burgess describe himself as “novelist, critic and Shakespeare lover”, and the podcast goes on to examine Burgess’s biography of Shakespeare and the ways in which the playwright influenced Burgess’s own writing. For those unfamiliar with Burgess’s most famous novel, episode five of the podcast is a good place to start. The podcast begins by tracing the inspiration for A Clockwork Orange. It also discusses Stanley Kubrick's controversial film adaptation, introducing the strange and violent world of the “drugs” – the gang at the central of the story. II. THE DEFINATION OF THE NOTION ‘’FACT’’ AND ‘’FICTION’’ IN LITERATURE
Literature is a term that describes both written and spoken works. Broadly speaking, it designates anything from creative writing to more technical or scientific works, but the term is most commonly used to refer to superior creative works of the imagination, including poetry, drama, and fiction, as well as nonfiction and in some cases song.
For many, the word literature suggests a higher art form; merely putting words on a page doesn't necessarily mean creating literature. Work of literature, at their best, provide a kind of blueprint of human civilization. From the writing of ancient civilizations like that of Egypt and China, and the Greeks' philosophy, poetry, and drama to the plays of Shakespeare, the novels of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, and the poetry of Maya Angelou, works of literature give insight and context to all the world's societies. In this way, literature is more than just a historical or cultural artifact; it can serve as an introduction to a new world of experience.
Fiction
The term fiction indicates written work that is invented by the imagination, such as novels, short stories, plays, and poems. This contrasts with nonfiction, fact-based work including essays, memoirs, biographies, histories, journalism, and other works that are factual in scope. Spoken works such as the epic poems of Homer and Medieval poets handed down by word of mouth, when writing them down was not possible or practical, are also considered a type of literature. Sometimes songs, like the courtly love songs conceived by the French and Italian troubadour lyric poets and poet musicians of the Middle Ages, which are fictional (even if they were inspired by fact), are considered literature.
