Abstract: Wool keratin protein is well suited to the development of
advanced applications in areas well outside conventional textile and fibre
products. Current commercial and legislative trends encouraging the
development of biopolymer alternatives to oil-derived synthetics have
created additional interest in the development of keratin biopolymer
products. Extending historic activities in the development of extruded keratin
fibres, recent applications range from medical devices for the treatment of
wounds or hard tissue injuries to nutritional applications capitalising on the
unique protein composition of wool keratin. Future developments promise to
capitalise on the most recent advances in medical science and biopolymer
technology.
