Interrelations between Context and ICT-Based Teaching Practice 
in the Perception of Teachers of Languages

PhD. Assistant professor at the Institute of Applied Linguistics, University 
of Warsaw; Head of Department of Methodology of Teaching English; Head of Centre for 
New Media in Applied Linguistics; She specializes in Computer Assisted Language 
Learning, and Computer Enhanced Teaching Languages, and the use of digital media in 
learning. Author of several publications on the methodology of computer assisted 
language education. Since 2004, an expert at the National Support Service of the 
eTwinning Programme. 
Abstract 
The aim of the study was to find the relations between contextual factors and the use of 
CALL in teaching practice in the light of teachers’ of languages opinions on the role of 
technology in teaching languages. 670 teachers of languages, who worked at all 
educational levels, participated in the study. They came from all regions of Poland. The 
survey was distributed and submitted via the internet. 
The age of teachers influence both pariticipation in international projects: the youngest 
and the oldest teachers do not participate in the international projects as often as the 
middle aged ones and the peception of the teacher’s role: young teachers agree more 
than other teachers with the opinion that 
Computer will never replace the teacher
.
The language taught also influences both the digital tools used and approach to the role 
of telecollaboration, that is English teachers significantly more often use electronic 
dictionaires, games and interactive whiteboards and agree significantly more often with 
the statement that 
Languages should be taught in direct contact, also via ICT, with 
foreign learners
. While German teachers use games and interactive withborads 
significantly less often than other teachers.
Participation in an eTwinning or Comenius international project encourages significant 
increase in the use if ICT for video and photo documentation of events, writing blogs and 
videoconferences. The use of electronic dictionaires is significantly interrelated with 
participation in social networkig, videoconfeences, writing blogs, photo and video 
documentation of events, reading and listening texts in the language they teach.
Surprisingly, the opinions on the technology neither influence the teaching practice nor 
they are interrelated with contextual factors.
