Conclusion
During writing the given course paper we have investigated different matters, related to the problems of teaching and learning vocabulary, using idioms in English. Special attention has been drawn to the problem of the vocabulary introduction and to the use of idioms which are related to health problems, colour, business and travelling.
The first chapter of the research explored various techniques and methods of teaching new vocabulary. Teacher must make use of such techniques while teaching of vocabulary. It also focused on expansion of vocabulary. Corder (1983) rightly observes, “The more words one knows, the easier it is to ‘learn’ new words, because one has more associative link available”.
There is no sure fire remedy or method to enhance vocabulary in a day or two. A student's vocabulary bank can be enriched on a gradual basis and one should always show keen interest and enthusiasm in finding, learning and understanding new words. Teaching vocabulary through incidental, intentional, and independent approaches requires teachers to plan a wide variety of activities and exercises.
We have thoroughly investigated the key strategies of teaching vocabulary and suggested the most efficient ways of determining the vocabulary comprehension and remembering. An efficient language teacher can use selected vocabulary activities or can use integrated activities. All this depends upon ability and level of understanding and interest of the learners. A student's vocabulary bank can be enriched on a gradual basis and one should always show keen interest and enthusiasm in finding, learning and understanding new words.
Above-mentioned idioms are accepted as part of everyday speech and undoubtedly are of great practical value. This paper also includes the observation of main problems in definition of phraseological unit and different approaches to their classification. This can help not to make mistakes in choosing of the idiom and studying it. This knowledge (of slightly difference in terms) gives ability to work not only with native linguistics works but also with foreign manuals and dictionaries. An idiom may be treated as a natural manner of speaking to a native speaker of a language. So idioms are integral part of language which make our speech more colourful and authentically native.
We have analyzed the huge contribution in English that was made by idioms. We have completed the following tasks: analyzing features of idioms; studying differences in the usage of idioms; describing the role of idiom in modern English.
In practical part of our research we chose the semantic field of colours, because they are very frequently used especially to convey certain meanings. As a very significant human experience, colours attracted many scholars’ attention. People always use colours to express their understandings and thoughts and their meaning changes across cultures.
Among figures of speech, idioms represent a set expression of two or more words that means something other than the literal meaning of its individual words. According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, an idiom “is a phrase or sentence whose meaning is not clear from the meaning of its individual words and which must be learnt as a whole unit” [11; 3, p.616]. The meaning of the idioms can be sometimes understood by looking the words up in a dictionary and using some common sense and imagination and the context of the phrase. Taking into account all these aspects this part of our research aims at focusing on colour terms used in the idiomatic expressions.
This paper also aims at focusing on idioms and expressions related to travelling, health problems and business and attempts to show a fresh look at the idiomatic phrases that make English the rich and intriguing language that it is. A corpora from both monolingual and bilingual dictionaries will be selected. The theoretical instruments of analysis will lead me in the investigation of the linguistic and lexical pattern of idioms and idiomatic phrases and will help me identify the way these words and expressions are reflected in idiomatic language. Having these goals as a background the paper is focused on developing a practical direction which will include a list of idioms related to travelling, health, business and colour meant to be a useful tool for students and teachers of English, both at university level and for English as a second language as well as for anyone interested in the more colourful side of the English language.
The practical value of the research consists in a possibility of use of material of work in lecture and seminar classes in a lexicology and cognitive linguistics, in the special courses devoted to a technique of conceptual researches and representation of a language picture of the world.
