NO. R-64. JOINT RESOLUTION in memory of Cora Partridge.

(J.R.H. 57)

Offered by: Representatives Partridge of Windham, Mallary of Brookfield and Obuchowski of Rockingham.

Whereas, Cora Cheney Partridge was a child of the South, who, although a native of Alabama, and educated in Florida and Georgia, grew up to be a literary and spiritual Vermonter who happily resided for many years in South Windham, and

Whereas, she expressed her love for Vermont through her pen as a children’s author, journalist and historian, and ultimately through her spiritual preaching and counseling to the rural parishioners to whom she lovingly devoted so much of her attention as an Episcopal priest, and

Whereas, Cora Partridge’s renown, as a children’s author, was immediately established in 1954 when her first novel for children “Skeleton Cave” was published to much acclaim, and

Whereas, two of her novels, “The Doll of Lilac Valley” and “The Mystery of the Disappearing Cars,” as well as a still-popular children’s history volume entitled “Vermont, the State with the Storybook Past,” were centered on life in Vermont, and

Whereas, as a journalist and history columnist for the “Brattleboro Reformer,” “Vermont Life” and “Country Journal,” Cora Partridge vividly chronicled the persons and events that comprise the Green Mountain State’s special heritage, and

Whereas, as a member of the faculty of Windham College, and as a graduate student at Antioch-Putney she was an active participant in Vermont’s higher education community, and

Whereas, when most persons are contemplating retirement, Cora Partridge committed herself to a new calling and was ordained as an Episcopal priest, and

Whereas, in her rural church mission in the Diocese of Vermont, she served as a unique inspiration and spiritual guide to her parishioners, and

Whereas, Cora Partridge was a trustee of the Vermont Historical Society, and her many accomplishments were recognized in the publication “Vermont’s Notable Women,” and

Whereas, at the time of her death, she was lovingly surrounded by her entire family who had gathered to bid farewell to a wife and mother who had brought solace, hope and joy to so many, now therefore be it

Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives:

That the General Assembly expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Cora Partridge, including her husband Captain Benjamin Partridge, her sons B. Waring and Alan, her daughters Denny and Marika, her daughter-in-law Representative Carolyn Partridge of Windham, and her nine grandchildren, and be it further

Resolved: That the Secretary of State be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Captain Benjamin Partridge in Takoma Park, Maryland.
