A general election took place in Canada
on 19th October. It was held to elect
members o f the House o f Commons, or
lower house, o f Canada’s parliament.
The outcome surprised many people.
After all votes had been counted, it was
confirmed that the Liberal Party had won
the majority o f the seats. The party’s
leader, Justin Trudeau, will therefore be
Canada’s new prime minister.
M r Trudeau’s success marks the start
o f a political dynasty and the possible
return o f ‘Trudeaumania’. At 43 years
o f age, he is Canada’s second young
est ever prime minister. M r Trudeau’s
father, Pierre Trudeau (1919 - 2000),
was the country’s prime minister from
1968 to 1979 and then again between
1980 and 1984. Pierre Trudeau also led
the Liberal Party.
W hen M r Trudeau’s father became
Canada’s prime minister for the first
time he was a very popular leader. Most
young Canadians supported him. Many
were excited about his new ideas. These
people believed that Pierre Trudeau rep
resented a new type o f ‘modern’ poli
tics. Large crowds gathered to hear him
speak. His popularity was nicknamed
Trudeaumania.
Pierre Trudeau was a bachelor when
he became prime minister in 1968.
Three years later, he shocked many Ca
nadians when he secretly married Justin
Trudeau’s mother. Then, Pierre Trudeau
was 52 years old. His wife was 30 years
younger. The couple separated when M r
Trudeau was five years o f age. Later,
they divorced. M r Trudeau and his two
younger brothers stayed with their father.
W hen M r Trudeau was born his father
was prime minister. He grew up at ‘24
Sussex D rive’. This is the official resi
dence o f the Canadian prime minister.

This large house is in Ottawa, the
country’s capital city. After finish
ing university, M r Trudeau became
a teacher. He always supported the
Liberal Party. M r Trudeau is mar
ried. He and his wife have three
young children. In the 2008 elec
tion, M r Trudeau stood as one of
the Liberal Party’s candidates. He
won his seat and became a member
o f parliament.
Canada is the second largest
country in the world. The biggest is
Russia. Canada stretches from the
Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pa
cific Ocean in the west. It is home
to about 36 million people. Around
60% o f all the w orld’s lakes are in
Canada. Its border with the USA is
the longest land border between two
countries in the world.
Canada is famous for its maple
syrup. This is made from the sap
o f the maple tree. The country pro
duces about 70% o f the w orld’s pure
maple syrup. The tree’s leaf is a na
tional symbol of Canada. A stylised
red maple leaf is in the centre of the
country’s flag.
Canada is a bilingual country. Its
two official languages are English
and French. This is because people
from both Britain and France left
Europe to go to live in Canada in
the 1600s and 1700s. The people
who lived there before Europeans
arrived are known as First Nations.
The name Canada is believed to
come from a First Nations word that
means ‘village’.
