Every four years, a presidential elec­
tion is held in the USA. This is an 
election year. The vote for the presi­
dent will be held on 8th November. 
However, selecting the candidates 
for the two main political parties 
takes a long time. It starts at the be­
ginning of the year with the Iowa 
caucus. This contest took place on 
1st February.
The Republicans and the Dem o­
crats are the two main political par­
ties in the USA. People are able to 
vote for the person who will repre­
sent their party in the presidential 
election. The two people who are 
eventually selected are known as 
the Republican and Democrat nomi­
nees.
Each o f America’s 50 states 
holds a vote. The contests are called 
‘caucuses’ or ‘prim aries’. The name 
depends on how the votes are count­
ed. Voting takes place in different 
states on different dates. The votes 
are spread over a five-month period. 
The first is usually in Iowa. The last 
states to vote do so in June.
Barack Obama is a member of 
the Democrat Party. He won the last 
two presidential elections in 2008 
and 2012. In the USA a president 
can serve for two successive four- 
year terms. M r Obama will hand 
over to a new president in January 
next year. Therefore, this year both 
Republicans and Democrats will 
have new nominees.
