This course was started in 2008 by the Department of
Haematology. This course is designed
forgraduates of life sciences who wish to learn more 
about techniques used in molecular and cell biology 
laboratories. This course equips a science graduate 
with the necessary skills to function independently in 
a molecular biology laboratory.
The programme has didactic lectures but also 
concentrates on hands on learning of a range of 
molecular biology techniques. This includes DNA 
and RNA extraction, polymerase chain reaction 
(PCR), gelelectrophoresis, restriction fragment length 
polymorphisms, various techniques involved in 
screening for mutations, reverse transcriptase PCR, 
quantitative PCR and DNA sequencing. Students 
learn about cell culture techniques, microscopy and 
imaging. They are also involved in learning about 
flow cytometry for blood samples for cancers and 
stem cells.
While the first year is used for learning these 
techniques, in the second year they will be able to 
perform these techniques on their own so as to 
understand their principles be er and become 
confident with independent functioning in a 
supervised environment.
Apart from this, the students are also expected
to a end departmental seminars and make 
presentations during these sessions.
Eligibility: BSc with 1st class in Botany / Zoology /
Biochemistry / Microbiology / Biotechnology

PG Diploma in Health Economics, Policy
& Financial Management (PGHEPFM)

The PGDHEFM is a one-year training designed to 
develop individuals to use economic principles in 
planning, decision making and evaluation of health 
programs and policies. This course responds to the 
need for health professionals trained to apply 
economics principles for decision making in health 
care and program management.
The course uses a modular structure and has 5 
modules taught over the year. In this course basic 
economic principles are applied to budgeting, 
decision making for resource allocation, program 
evaluation, planning for programs and in clinical 
research.
The course uses sound pedagogical principles and a 
wide variety of teaching methods including group- 
work, discussions, field-visits, exercises, games, 
videos, lectures that make the course participatory,

interesting and meaningful. The course is delivered 
by a team of experts in RUHSA, community health 
department of CMC Vellore that has a rich experience 
in working for social and economic development of 
the community, as well as experts in economics, 
finance and hospital management studies. An 
integral part of the course is the field exposure to 
various departments in CMC and practicum, 
providing an opportunity foreffective self-directed 
learning.
The course is suited to graduates from health- related 
disciplines and backgrounds that intend to further a 
career in health economics- evaluations of programs 
and policies, health technology assessments and 
financial management of health systems as health 
administrators, public health researchers and 
community health specialists. Typically students find 
place as researchers, financial planners and managers 
in health departments, private health facilities or 
government and development agencies.
Eligibility: Bachelor's Degree or a direct Masters in 
any discipline, from any recognised University.
Duration: 1 year
PG Diploma in Histopathological 
Laboratory Technology
(Awarded by the Christian Medical Association of India)
This is a one year course intended to train students in 
processing tissues and staining of sections for 
microscopic examination, autopsy techniques and 
preservation and mounting of specimens for display 
in pathology museums. They are also trained in 
cytological methods which are widely used in the 
early detection of cancer in pathology laboratories 
and cancer hospitals.
The examination at the end of the course is conducted 
by the Laboratory Training Commi ee of the 
Christian Medical Association of India leading to the 
Post Graduate Diploma in Histopathological 
laboratory Technology (awarded by CMAI).
Eligibility: Pass with minimum 5O% marks, in BSc 
MLT/ BSc with Biology or Botany/Zoology or 
Biochemistry or Microbiology as main subject/BSc 
Physics or Chemistry as main, with Botany or 
Zoology as ancillary.

PG Diploma in Hospital Administration 
(PGDHA)
Programme jointly managed by Tata Institute of 
Social Sciences (TISS) and CMC,

Hospitals are highly complex organizations, 
irrespective of size. They provide a broad range of 
medical services, products (mainly pharmaceuticals) 
and offer hospitality services. There is a need for 
efficient administrators who can plan, coordinate and 
manage hospitals to ensure smooth and efficient 
delivery of healthcare services.
Recognizing the need for quality training for 
comprehensive knowledge and experience in the 
administration and operation of any level hospital, 
the Department of Hospital Management Studies & 
Staff Training and Development, CMC, offers
PGDHA. Students will also have additional inputs 
from Loyola Institute of Business Administration 
(LIBA), Chennai.
