Objectives: - to teach past simple and present perfect in comparison

Approach – teaching grammar as product

Teacher instructions:


  • In the activity students are provided with the hand outs which has the dialogue (See appendix 1).

  • Tell the students that they should notice what tenses are used and what signals have contributed to choose the right tenses.

  • While they are working assist students to find the signals

Critical analysis of the activity

The activity is specifically formed for practicing the approach teaching grammar as product. As it is stated by Blatstone (1994) “Initially, learners have to notice features of the grammar before they can do anything with them”. It means in the activity which are conducted based on this technique students should be provided with an opportunity to notice the target grammar point by reading and analyzing the context. Another linguist Willis (1993) also claimed that “A good product system can provide good conditions for noticing or what he calls a good ‘intake facilitation’ of the approach”. According to this suggestion in the activity a dialogue is provided with some signal words such as yesterday, last day in order to make the activity not so complicated.
