The last day at Babu’s house
Many days had passed. Munoo still worked for the Babu and his wife. He cleaned the dishes , peeled the vegetables, swept the floors, made the beds, served the food and did everything his mistress told him. But he also laughed, sang, danced, shouted, jumped, wishing to break the berriers between him and his masters. One day, Munoo sat peeling potatoes in the kitchen, Sheila and her friends had come home from school and were playing in the living-room. Bibiji was not at home.the boy wanted to finish his work as quickly as possible, because he wished to go and play with the girls. He ran into the room and began to jump about and dance his monkey dance which the children liked so much. But this time they did not want to play with him.
“Go away,” cried one of the girls.
“ Go to the kitchen. Mother said we must not not play with you,” said Sheila, coming up to him and catching him by the ear. He let her pull his ear to the great pleasure of the girls. Sheila pulled harder. Munoo turned round and jumping upon her showed his teeth as if he were a real monkey. Then suddenly before he knewwhat he was doing he bit her cheek.
“ Mother! Oh, Mother!” Sheila cried. Bibiji who had just come home ran into the room. Looking at Sheila she cried : “Show me your face, my child!”The girl’s cheek was blue where Munoo had bitten it.
“I was only playing ,Bibiji,” said Munoo.
“Oh, you monster! Didn’t I tell you not to play with my child! You must not play with the children of your masters. Didn’t I tell you that you are not our class! They are the children of a big Babu! Think of our reputation! Now we’ll hand you over to the police.”
“ What has happened? What is the matter? ” asked Babu Nathoo Ram, coming in.
“What has happened?” cried Bibiji. “This monster, may he die!”
“ Oh, but what is the matter? What is it?”
“ I am telling you, my heart is burning! He has bitten Sheila!” “Why? Why?” cried Nathoo Ram in a terrible voice. “Babuji, I was only playing,”Munoo said, looking up at his master nervously.
“ Playing, oh, you were playing,”Munoo said, looking up at his master nervously.
“ Playing, oh, you were playing! I’ll teach you to play! Take this!” And he slapped Munoo on the cheek and struck him with his shiny black boots which had been the dream of Munoo’s life…
“ Forgive me, Bibiji, forgive me!” cried Munoo, fallingon the floor. Nathoo Ram seized a thick stick that was lying in the corner of the room and struck the boy fiercely.
“Oh, Babiji, forgive me, forgive, forgive please!” Munoo cried. But his master struck him blow after blow. “You swine! He cried raising his stick again and again.”
