LESSON 11:DISCUSS THE PROS AND CONS OF DIFFERENT STYLES
Aim: to introduce students with the concept of learning strategies and methods that students use to learn.


Objectives:

  • to help students to know about the concept learning strategies

  • to discuss the importance of being aware of learners’ learning strategies in teaching

  • to raise students’ awareness of learner differences

  • to practice adapting exercises to cater different learning strategies

A Learning Strategy is a person’s approach to learning and using information. Students use Learning Strategies to help them understand information and solve problems. Students who do not know or use good learning strategies often learn passively and ultimately fail in school. Learning Strategy instruction focuses on making students more active learners by teaching them how to learn and how to use what they have learned to be successful.


Learning strategies refer to methods that students use to learn. This ranges from techniques for improved memory to better studying or test-taking strategies. For example, the method of loci is a classic memory improvement technique; it involves making associations between facts to be remembered and particular locations. In order to remember something, you simply visualize places and the associated facts.
In relation to language learning styles, Willing (1994) identified four major styles: communicative, analytical, authority-oriented and concrete. These styles were derived from learner strategy preferences, which, in Willing’s data, clustered in the following ways.

  • Communicative: These learners were defined by the following learning strategies: they like to learn by watching, listening to native speakers, talking to friends in English, watching television in English, using English out of class, learning new words by hearing them, and learning by conversation.

  • Analytical: These learners like studying grammar, studying English books and newspapers, studying alone, finding their own mistakes, and working on problems set by the teacher.
