Each of the boys were good at grammar .
Were he indeed?
Every cat have their own bowl .
No: every cat has its own bowl . Just as every cat has a tail (unless it is a Manx cat,
of course, but let’s not go there).
Useful mnemonic: think of these words as each one and every one and you’ll
remember to use a singular verb and a singular pronoun.
Rule: the following words are singular and require singular verbs:
each
everybody one
every
anyone
someone
everyone anybody somebody
However,  any,  all,  most  and  some  can  be  either  singular  or  plural.  It  depends
whether they are being applied to countable or non-countable nouns (see
here
).
All of the petty cash has been stolen.
All of the suspects have gone to the pub together.
Some of their discarded kebabs have been discovered.
Some of the money has been found.
Most of it is still missing.
Most of the culprits are nursing hangovers.
Rule: many, both, a few and several are always followed by a plural verb.
I’ve got your number
Numerical  expressions  can  be  rather  tricky,  but  just  remember  that  the
expression  the  number  is  singular,  which  means  it  should  be  followed  by  a
singular verb:
The number is 6.
The number in question is 666.

The number of people unaccounted for is 6,000.
The number of people who died was 60,000 .
Exception: A number of is used with plural nouns and takes a plural verb:
A number of people were in shock after the incident.
Numerical expressions, however, take either the singular and plural form of the
verb,  according  to  whether  they  are  being  referred  to  as  a  single  entity  or  as
individuals within a group.
