About whom are we talking?
For the purposes of grammar, there are only three persons (not people, there are
loads of them) in the world:
first person: the speaker (I , me , we , us )
second person: the hearer (you )
third person: the person or thing spoken of (he , she , it , they , him , her , them
)
In  modern  English,  you  serves  as  both  singular  and  plural,  but  always  takes  a
plural verb – you are my lucky star , you were made for me , you drive me crazy –
even  when  only  one  person  is  being  addressed.  Thou  and  thee  were  once  the
singular  forms,  but  they  are  now  never  used  except  as  deliberate  archaisms,  in
church and in some dialects.
Smart Alec: Many languages have both informal and formal words for you : the
French tu and vous and the German Du and Sie , for example. English only has
you , having done away with thou centuries ago. But did you know that thou was
in fact the more informal of the two? English has preserved the impeccably
polite word rather than the chummy one. Now why should that be?
