My Grammar and I (Or Should That Be 'Me'?): Old-School Ways to Sharpen Your English

It’s just one thing after another
Words from each of the parts of speech are used as building blocks : they add to
meaning by modifying or qualifying one another. Consider this sentence:
A brown cow in a great, green field ate grass greedily.
By painting a more detailed picture, words limit (modify, qualify – you’ll come
across  all  these  words  to  describe  the  same  sort  of  thing)  and  thus  clarify
meaning.  In  the  above  sentence,  for  instance,  we  are  not  talking  about  cows  in
general; the article a tells us we are talking about one specific cow. The cow is
not any colour; it is brown. The cow is not just standing there; it is eating grass.
Where  is  it  eating  grass?  In  a  field.  Not  any  old  field;  but  a  great,  green  one.
How is it eating? Greedily.
In  fact,  that  sentence  doesn’t  cover  all  the  parts  of  speech,  so  let’s  add  another
few words:
A brown cow in a great, green field ate grass greedily, and gosh it grew fat!
The  conjunction  and  tells  us  that  we  are  joining  one  thought  to  another.  The
interjection gosh gives us an excuse to write an exclamation mark at the end of
the sentence. And it , of course, is a pronoun that refers back to the cow.
So let’s now look at each of these building blocks in more detail.
