Our speaker would have been a serious con man, except that A) he's not smart enough, and B) a real scam involves real work, rendering it wholly inaccessible to our [dialect] speaker. He finds a great treasure, loses the great treasure, and gains thereby in the end. It's a short story. Surely you can read the few pages and find out what that means.
