century. After Webster's death, the Merriam brothers bought the rights to republish the dictionary. Since then it has been known as the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
By the 20th century, the American dialect in its colloquial version had fully taken shape. The development of literary American and the consolidation of established norms began. This was facilitated by outstanding American writers - Jack London, Fennimore Cooper, Mark Twain, O. Henry and others.
Modern American language
Recently, there has been a convergence of American and British versions of English. The American is beginning to dominate around the world and also influences its British relative. The British began to use Americanisms in their speech more and more often.
The modern British language, firstly, is heterogeneous, and secondly, it is far from classical English, which existed 3 centuries ago. Within the British version, there are three language types: conservative English (conservative - the language of the royal family and parliament), the accepted standard (received pronunciation, RP - the language of the media, it is also called BBC English) and advanced English (advanced - the language of youth). The latter type is the most mobile, it is the type that actively absorbs elements of other languages and cultures. Advanced English is most affected by the general tendency to simplify the language. Changes occur primarily in vocabulary, one of the most mobile parts of the language, and grammar. Language changes in grammar are caused, first of all, by the tendency to save language efforts and simplify the language. New vocabulary comes to the British youth language from other variants of English, in particular, American [5].
America has created almost a new language: changes have affected not only phonetics and vocabulary, but also the most stable part of the language - grammar. Therefore, it is quite natural that disputes are conducted mainly around two versions of the English language - British and American.
Unlike the British version, American English is more flexible, open to change and easy to understand. In particular, this is why it has become more widespread in

the world. It is the language of a new generation without a specific nationality and place of residence, brought up on popular culture. The English language of modern youth is more or less common due mainly to a common culture, rock music, dense communication and those ideals and idols that are common spiritual food.
In the modern world, the United States plays a big role in world politics and economics. World English, which is known and studied all over the world, is formed under the great influence of the American version of English. This can be explained by a number of reasons: Americans are much more numerous than the British, the printing industry and the media are better developed, and American pop culture is more influential.
