It is true that in a manner of speaking, intercultural communication helps connect with speakers of various languages on equivalent terms and respect their individuality. Intercultural communication mainly aims to improve the understanding of communication that is moderated through culture.
Understanding that various cultures have distinct social traditions, thought process, standards, and customs are important for study intercultural communication. It also requires a little awareness of institutions and organizations, way of living, and history and cultures of different countries and communities.
The term “intercultural communication” represents broad ideas that are difficult to express in just one way. According to Samovar and Porter a person’s notion of the world around him/her is closely established in the system of symbols that his or her culture uses to make sense of the world. Furthermore, they claim that intercultural communication is the ‘interaction between people whose cultural perceptions and symbol systems are distinct enough to alter the communication event’.
In addition, Hall emphasizes “Culture is communication and communication is culture”. It means that Culture is passed on via Communication and Communication reflects one’s Culture.
Moreover, understanding the root of intercultural communication is a tough task. This is because, it is a complicated phenomenon to understand completely and it has been continually changing in recent years.
There are a number of factors which appear during intercultural communication. The first and the foremost factor is mass media. As we all know, Mass media is the most convenient way to acquire knowledge about culture. Media in the form of television ,radio, newspaper, songs, music and the Internet, all play a vital role in helping us to form our own opinions, make sentences and impact our perceptions and therefore our communication with individuals and groups of people.
Another key factor of intercultural communication is quality of the intercultural contact that we have in our personal and professional environments. As a result of significant increase in recent years around the globe because of better, faster and easier access to transport and information technologies, and by an increase in
migration caused by ethnic conflicts, environmental factors and the attraction of a better lifestyle in a more stable economy in another part of the world. Moreover, language barriers can also be considered as a factor. The other barrier is that language is a medium for communicating cultural values and beliefs.
