Embroidery is one of the most popular kinds of traditional art in Uzbekistan 
which holds a very important place in wedding rituals. The monograph examines 
embroidery in its many different forms, and the features that differentiate 
local ornamental styles. Special attention is paid to revealing the connection 
between embroidery and the ritual and religious practices that have prevailed at 
different stages of the society’s development, and to uncovering the meaning of 
compositions and designs.
Part One, “Embroidery in the Culture of Uzbekistan,” examines the history 
of embroidery, its local centers and schools in the 19th century and beginning of 
the 20th, the materials and technology used in embroidery production, the visual 
elements characteristic for sedentary and semi-nomadic populations, and the 
functional significance of embroidery. Particular attention is paid to its role in ritual 
family observances that relied on embroidery’s magical and protective qualities to 
promote the continuation of the family line. A typology is offered that sees designs 
as sacral texts bearing special meanings for society, and the key groups of motifs are 
distinguished. The most archaic elements of embroidery decoration – the legacy of 
local ancient sedentary-agricultural and nomadic cultures – were linked with pre-
Islamic cults and religions (Zoroastrianism, the cult of fire, the astral cult, the cult 
of nature, totemism, shamanism and magic). Other elements were formed under 
the influence of Islamic aesthetics and its dominant theme, the garden of paradise. 
Decorations were always connected with wishes for good fortune; embroidery 
patterns contained coded information directed at the continuation of the family line.
