Global warming - is the long-term heating of Earth’s climate system observed since the pre-industrial period (between 1850 and 1900) due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth’s atmosphere. The term is frequently used interchangeably with the term climate change, though the latter refers to both human- and naturally produced warming and the effects it has on our planet.

Some parts of Earth are warming faster than others. But on average, global air temperatures near Earth's surface have gone up about 2 degrees Fahrenheit in the past 100 years. In fact, the past five years have been the warmest five years in centuries.

What causes climate change?

There are lots of factors that contribute to Earth’s climate. However, scientists agree that Earth has been getting warmer in the past 50 to 100 years due to human activities.

Human activities — such as burning fuel to power factories, cars and buses — are changing the natural greenhouse. These changes cause the atmosphere to trap more heat than it used to, leading to a warmer Earth.

However, the main driver of climate change is the greenhouse effect. Some gases in the Earth's atmosphere act a bit like the glass in a greenhouse, trapping the sun's heat and stopping it from leaking back into space and causing global warming.

The effects of global warming:

There are many effects of Global warming. Here are the most important ones:

1. Hotter days;

2. Rising sea levels;

3.Oceans are warming and acidifying

4.More frequent and intense extreme weather events

How can we stop global waming?

Here are some solutions:

  • Power your home with renewable energy
  •  Weatherize, weatherize, weatherize
  •  Invest in energy-efficient appliances
  • Reduce water waste
  • Drive a fuel-efficient vehicle
  •  Shrink your carbon profile

New words glossary:

Greenhouse - a glass building in which plants that need protection from cold weather are grown;

Weatherize - make (a house or other building) resistant to cold weather by adding insulation, storm windows, etc.

Appliance - a device or piece of equipment designed to perform a specific task. "electrical and gas appliances”

Shrink - become or make smaller in size or amount.

Shrink - become or make smaller in size or amount.

"the workforce shrank to a thousand“

Intense - of extreme force, degree, or strength.

"the job demands intense concentration“
