T he  U nited  K ingdom   o f  G reat  B ritain  and  N orthern  Ireland  (the  U K )  has  been  the 
official  nam e o f  the  B ritish K ingdom  since  1922.
It  includes  England, 
Scotland,  W ales,  N orthern,  Ireland  and  a   num ber  o f  
sm aller  Islands.  G reat  B ritain  is  situated  on  the  B ritish  Isles  lying  to  the  w est  o f  the 
continent  o f   Europe.  It  is  separated  from  the  continent  by  the  N orth  Sea  and  the 
E nglish  C hannel.  G reat  B ritain  and  the  N orthern  part  o f   Ireland  form   the  U nited 
K ingdom  o f  G reat B ritain  and N orthern  Ireland.
G reat  B ritain  is  the  pow erful  capitalist  country.  T he  capital  o f  the  country  is 
L ondon.  London  is  situated  on  the  river  Tham es.  It  is  o n e  o f  the  biggest  com m ercial 
centers  and ports  in the w orld.
T extile,  chem ical,  shipbuilding,  electronics  an d   other  industries  are  highly 
d eveloped in the  country.
T he  B ritish  Q ueen  is  proclaim ed  to  be  the  head  o f  the  state  and  is  represented 
by  a  g o v ern o r general.
T he  flag  o f  B ritain  is  called  the  U nion  Jack.  It  has  the  red  cross  o f  St.  G eorge 
o f  England  the  w hite  cross  o f  St.  A ndrew  o f  Scotland  and the  red  cross  o f  St.  Patrick 
o f   Ireland  all  on  a  blue  background.  “ G od  save  the  (Q ueen)  K ing”  is  the  B ritish 
national  anthem .  The  B ritish  currency  is  the  pound  sterling.  O ne  pound  consists  o f  
100  pence.  T he  B ritish  Isles  lie  o f  the  north-w est  coast  o f  the  continent  o f  Europe. 
T he  U K   can  be  divided  into  four  large  historical  areas:  E ngland,  Scotland,  W ales  and 
N orthern  Ireland.  G reat  B ritain  is  separated  from   the  E uropean  continent  by  the 
E nglish  C hannel.  To  the  w est  the  Irish  Sea  separates  G reat  B ritain  from  Ireland.  The 
population  o f   the  U nited  K ingdom   is  m ore  than  61  m illion  people.  T he  B ritish 
population  is  m ostly  urban and suburban.
E ngland  is  the  m ost  densely  populated  part o f  the  UK.  T he  A tlantic  ocean  and 
the  seas  w ashing  G reat  B ritain  effect  the  clim ate  o f  the  country.  It  is  m ild  and  dam p 
M any  rivers  is  deep.  T h ere are  m any  rivers  in  B ritain,  but only  few  o f  them   are  long. 
T he  longest river  is  the  Severn.  The highest m ountain  is  Ben N evis  in  Scotland.
G reat  B ritain  is  one  o f  the  m ost  im portant  industrial  countries  in  the  w orld.  O ne  o f  
the  extensive  industries  o f  G reat  B ritain  is  the  textile  industry.  G reat  B ritain  has  also 
been  noted  for coal,  iron  and  steel.
A n o th er  leading  industry  in  G reat  B ritain  has  been  shipbuilding  and  the 
autom obile  industry  is  highly  developed.  M ajor  industrial  and  business  centers  o f  the 
country  include  B irm ingham ,  G lasgow ,  B elfast  an d  L ondon.  A griculture  is  one o f  the 
w ell-developed  branches  o f   the  national  econom y.  It  produces  meat,  vegetables, 
fruits,  grain  and o th er types o f  agricultural  products.
