FINE ARTS 
Intro to Art 
This course introduces art through a multimedia experience. Students will learn 
and apply the elements and principles of design to produce creative art projects 
that reflect their understanding of these concepts. It is the prerequisite to Draw 
1 & 2, Paint 1 & 2, Studio 1 & 2, and Arts & Cultures. (.5 Credit) 
Arts & Culture 
Students will explore art from around the world through project-based activities. 
Based on directed investigation and art history, students reinterpret selected 
forms to promote understanding of themes, purposes, symbolism, and 
traditional formal characteristics. Students compare various cultural responses 
in art to universal themes, gaining respect for diverse perspectives and the rich 
heritage shared by cultures from around the world. This course incorporates 
hands-on activities and consumption of art materials. 
Prerequisite: Intro to Art or Instructor Approval
Ceramics 1 
Ceramics is a semester course in which students will explore a broad range of 
techniques and approaches to art through hand building. Students will learn to 
approach ceramic artwork as both functional and decorative sculptural objects. 
Development of technical skills and artistic vocabulary will include scoring, 
slipping, hand building (slab, coil, and pinch techniques), bisque firing, painting, 
and glazing, plus the endless alternative possibilities involved with clay. Students 
are also required to keep a personal sketchbook and study specific artists, 
cultures, and art historical movements. 
Prerequisite: Intro to Art or Instructor Approval
Ceramics 2 
This course will build upon the knowledge and skills gained in Ceramics 
1. Students will continue to develop their skills in hand building and wheel 
throwing. Class exercises and projects will demand that students explore 
solutions to more complicated and challenging visual problems. Students will 
demonstrate different glazing techniques to achieve desired appearance and 
aesthetic, as well as to express their creativity. 
Prerequisite: Ceramics 1 or Instructor Approval
