This chapter contains an exposition of the situation of women in higher education in
South Africa and the United Kingdom. It presents a descriptive and a statistical overview
of women’s under-representation in professional and non-professional categories in
higher education in South Africa and the UK. The obstacles which prevent women’s
advancement to positions of leadership and management are examined in-depth as well as
the impact of racism and class. A list of possible strategies for dismantling and
overcoming these barriers is given. The chapter ends with a summary and conclusion.
