human resources management skills are necessary for career success (Gustin, 2001; Kay & Russette, 2000;
Moscardo, 1997). Employers are readily urging higher educators to incorporate employability skills into students’
learning experiences (Atkins, 1999; Hewitt, 2005). Robinson (2006) identified 67 employability skills that were
perceived important by educators, employers and employees in entry-level positions for employment success. These
employability skills were employed for this study and displayed in Table 1 and 2.
Since Lewis’ (1993) latter study, numerous studies have been conducted to investigate competencies
needed by hospitality management graduates to be society-ready (Christou, 2002; Christou & Eaton, 2000; Hsu,
1995). Most of these studies focused on the perceptions of the industry leaders, graduates of the program and
hospitality program educators. A review of the literature found no studies describing the level of competence of
society-ready HRM students as perceived by the students themselves. Due to fast paced changes in the hospitality
industry, with great emphasis on employability skills that interest employers, there is a need to determine the level
of competence that graduating senior students in hospitality management programs posses before moving on to
workplace. Knowing students’ self-perceived level of preparedness in various employability skills would enable
hospitality educators to identify competencies to be given priority in their curriculum and program planning. Hence,
the objectives of this study were (1)to assess the self-perceived employability skills for careers in the hospitality
industry of senior students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) program, (2) describe what
environment (those associated with higher educational experience or those not associated with higher educational
experience) students perceived they developed competence in employability skills needed for careers in the
hospitality industry, and (3) describe relationships between HRM student work experience, internship, and self-
perceived competence in employability skills needed in the hospitality industry.
