Survey Instrument
The survey instrument employed for this study consisted of four sections. The first section measured
respondents’ leisure travel preference, which includes various questions about their recent and general travel
experiences (i.e., travel frequency, trip length, satisfaction with leisure trips, travel information sources, trip
planners, and travel companion), about their travel motives and constraints, about travel destination attributes, and
about their travel intentions. The third section measured respondents’ overall assessment of their lives with the
Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) developed by Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin (1985). The last section
collected some socio-demographic information (i.e., age, gender, marital status, race, education, and employment
status, household income, and self-perceived health), as well as the length of their current residence at their present
home and in the upstate of South Carolina.
