In addition, among the national research institutes in specialized fields, there are the 
Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research (CAMR), an applied microbiological 
research laboratory that undertakes research on vaccine development and pathogenic 
organisms, and the National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC), 
an independent national biological institute responsible for controlling and evaluating 
biological medicine and antibiotics at the national level.  These institutes work 
closely with the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC) for research and 
evaluation when needed.
