Many thanks to Sandy for the quick turnaround of Friday's minutes.  Please note at the end of the minutes, there is a list of important event dates.   The next MBU Board Meeting will be March 11th at 9 Island Board Room at 9AM- another quick turnaround since we did not complete the agenda on Friday. Also, read the two resolutions the board approved regarding the boardwalk and the sale of private properties in North Beach.  These will be sent to the members for comment and then circulated to the city commission .

At 9:06 a.m. President Nancy Liebman called the meeting to order and announced that a quorum was present.

Ira Giller, a resident of Mid-Beach, described a recent meeting of the City Planning and Public Works Departments regarding the destruction of the Miami Beach boardwalk, at which the City said they would require new projects to replace the wood boardwalk with a concrete sidewalk and would not pay for repairs to nor reconstruction of boardwalks on Miami Beach. Developers who appeared before the Commission were heard, but they refused to hear the group of runners Ira represents. The group developed a petition and several hundred have signed it so far. Terry Bienstock made a motion. MBU resolves that: the City Commission shall revisit any requirement or policy to eliminate the wooden boardwalk along the beach; that a public Workshop be held on the issue; and that there be a moratorium on any demolition of existing boardwalk under any development order pending City Commission review. The motion was seconded by Herb Frank and it was agreed that the concept be presented at the March 19 Land Use Committee. The motion passed unanimously.

Daniel Veitia, MBU member and North Beach resident, and Paul Mokha, representing the Fairway Park Association of North Beach, reported that the City Commission’s suggestion to sell public property at 72nd Street and North Collins Avenue are in opposition to the long term plans approved by the North Beach Residents and codified by the Commission into a Zoning Plan, called the North Beach Town Center, more than 7 years ago. Herb Sosa made a motion: MBU supports the North Beach Town Center plan requiring a pedestrian-level ocean-to-bay green space. MBU is against the selling or leasing of public land for private use and profit. Saul Gross seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

Treasurer Saul Gross reported that 58 of last year’s members have renewed so far vs.76 total last year, and we have $2,600.00 in the bank.

Terry Bienstock proposed a resolution giving residents certain rights at Land Use Bards, as they historically have faced procedural obstacles that prevent their being heard at the Planning Board and DRB, noting specific instances. After discussion, it was agreed that MBU should develop a “Residential Bill of Rights” This should be done at an MBU Workshop for neighborhood associations, including the City attorney, Commissioners, Planning Committee staff and Land Use board chairs. Terry agreed to daft a summary of the items to be considered at such a meeting to be held at the beginning of April (8th to 11th) at the golf course at about 5:30 p.m.

Herb Frank again raised the need for a Membership Chair. He agreed to print out a list of homeowner associations and Saul Gross will bring a list of those which are members to our next meeting. They can then be divided among the Board for phone calling.

There being no further urgent matters and the loss of several members in the course of the meeting, Herb Frank made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Sandy Money seconded and the motion was unanimously approved at 10:51 a.m.
